The next Census will be held on March 6, 2018 - and New Zealanders will have new options to complete it on technology including smartphones and tablets.

The Government wants to have 70% of forms completed online - up from the 34% in 2013.

Today's confirmation of the Census date from the Government Statistician has been welcomed by Statistics Minister Craig Foss.

"The census provides the Government, iwi, businesses and our communities with robust and independent data that is invaluable for making smart evidence-based decisions," Mr Foss says.

"For example, the last count in 2013 told us that, if New Zealand was a village of 100 people, 24 were born overseas, 21 had a tertiary qualification, and two were machinery operators and drivers."

Mr Foss said Statistics NZ was creating new mobile versions of the census forms, including tablet and desktop versions.

Paper forms would still be available.
