Former United Future MP Gordon Copeland has been elected president of the Kiwi Party by its board.

"Having someone with Gordon's long experience in business, the charitable sector and Parliament will be a real asset to the party in the years ahead," party leader Larry Baldock said.

An opponent of Sue Bradford's child discipline bill, Mr Copeland split from United Future in 2007 over its decision to treat the bill as a conscience vote.

After failing to pull together a pan-Christian party, he helped set up the Kiwi Party. It polled just 0.56 percent of the vote in last October's election.

Mr Copeland replaces Frank Naea, who remains on the party board.
