The Special Air Services (SAS) involved in an incident in
Afghanistan capital Kabul last week fired no shots.
Prime Minister John Key and Lieutenant General Jerry
Mateparae fronted to media this afternoon under a new policy
of openness around some SAS activity.
The SAS issue blew up last week when some media outlets
published photos of two New Zealand SAS members, including
Victoria Cross winner Corporal Willie Apiata, at the scene of
fighting in the Afghanistan capital Kabul between Taliban
fighters and Afghan commandos.
Lt Gen Mateparae said Cpl Apiata had been told to be more
careful about being seen in future, given he was so
identifiable. He had not however broken any rules.
Reporters were told SAS played a liaison role at last week's
Taliban attack in Kabul's Pashtunistan Square.
