Eden Park redevelopment looking for $40m

Ratepayers are being asked to underwrite about $40 million to cover the cost of redeveloping Eden Park which is being revamped for the 2011 rugby World Cup.

Radio New Zealand reported today that the Government has refused to increase its contribution of $190m from the Government, and has asked councils to cover funding gaps while commercial sponsorship was sought.

Funding for the stadium has been a sticking point for Auckland City Council, which has in the past insisted it won't contribute cash for the project.

Not quite

It's the Auckland City Council, so it's $40 million from a population base of 444,100. Still much higher pro-rata, but I believe part of their objection is that they consider the other Auckland cities (North Shore, Waitakere, Manakau) should contribute (which would spread it over ~1.3 million people).

Yes, pro rata...

$40 million between two million, or well over $200 million amongst a pop base of 120 000? And the crux is they are refurbishing and wisely threw out the idea of another stadium, realising there was no need to replace something that wasn't broken in the first place.

If any money should be blown we should be doing the same to The Brook. Another stage of refurbishment would let us cover the stands - not that it's really necessary, given there's plenty of open stadiums in main centres and that doesnt stop them being used. Vanity fair here indeed.

What a laugh to hear Cr Guest saying most Dunedin people are now excited about it. The blatant self-serving delusions and denial of the DCC are clearly still alive and well. [Abridged]

$40m is peanuts!

The ratepayers of Auckland are being asked to underwrite $40 million for Eden Park's redevelopment. This really is peanuts when compared to what the Dunedin ratepayers are being forced to cough up for the new Otago Stadium. Can you imagine the fuss generated if Auckland ratepayers were asked to pay the equivalent?
