A final report from the government review of safety in the
adventure tourism industry is being completed for Minister of
Labour Kate Wilkinson.
The Department of Labour review was sparked by Prime Minister
John Key last September, after he became concerned about
incidents in the adventure and outdoor commercial sectors,
including the death of British backpacker Emily Jordan (21)
while she was riverboarding in the Kawarau River in April
2008.
The first phase of the review was scoping and establishing
the knowledge base.
A report released on February 18 showed 29 adventure tourists
had died in the five years to last June 30, and took stock of
risk management and safety provisions in the sectors,
including regulations, auditing, monitoring and
quality-assurance systems.
The final report is expected to suggest ways to close gaps in
risk management and safety provisions in the sectors.
The review's steering group comprises 11 representatives from
the Department of Labour, Ministry of Transport, Civil
Aviation Authority, Tourism Industry Association of New
Zealand, Maritime New Zealand, ACC and the Queenstown Lakes
District Council, the Department of Conservation and Outdoors
New Zealand.
