A film about a group of kayakers tackling the difficult
whitewater rivers of Greenland has won the New Zealand-made
category of the New Zealand Mountain Film Festival, to be
held in Wanaka from July 2 to 6.
Organiser Mark Sedon yesterday released the names of the
winners and the screening programme of the 53 finalists
culled from 90 entrants.
A record 20 New Zealand films were submitted, with 13
selected for the finals, he said.
Mount Maunganui film-maker Jared Meehan won the New
Zealand-made category, winning $1000 and the
Hiddleston/MacQueen Award for his film Into Perpetual Ice.
Other festival winners:Grand prize and $1000: Mount St Elias,
Austria (three men attempt the longest ski descent on Earth
in Alaska).
Best film on climbing: The Asgard Project, UK (climber Leo
Houldings makes an ambitious ascent of Mt Asgards north
face).
Best film on mountain culture: Nature Propelled, US (a
petroleum-free adventure in a fire engine).
Best short film: Snow Tramp, Canada.
Best film adventurous sports and lifestyles: Take a Seat, UK
(Dominic Gill's mission to cycle 32,000km from Alaska to
South America on a tandem bike).
Best sports film: REV: A Buried Treasure, Canada (about the
transition of a historic quiet mountain town to a world-class
ski area).
