Ribbon ride arrives

About 15 men and women dressed in black leather arrived at Remarkables Park yesterday, all wearing white ribbons, honouring their vow never to condone or conceal violence against women or children.

The White Ribbon Motorcycle Ride has been doing the southern South Island circuit this week. Motorcycle enthusiasts have been encouraged to join legs of the ride, which is organised by the Families Commission and yesterday took in Queenstown, Cromwell and Wanaka.

Families Commission White Ribbon Campaign manager Rob McCann said the riders were talking to a wide variety of people, from school children to prison inmates.

"It really is important to get people talking about it.

"Family violence goes across all spectrums ... it's just some people are a hell of a lot better at covering it up.

"At schools, it's about getting rid of bullying; that's often where the violence starts. With the older audience, it's about getting rid of the violence and working with the many organisations out there who can assist you."

Mr McCann said up to 21 riders joined the group on Monday.

White Ribbon Day will be marked this Friday.
