A Queenstown man appeared in court yesterday after he stole
$4195 from his employer to fuel his gambling addiction, even
taking the money during early-morning casino binges.
Carolito Surreal Ross (33), of Arthurs Point, yesterday
appeared in the Queenstown District Court, having pleaded
guilty to two charges of theft by a person in a special
relationship and five charges of obtaining by deception.
On October 30, Ross was gambling at the Lassetters Wharf
Casino and, after running out of money, returned to the
Distinction Nugget Point Hotel, where he worked as assistant
manager.
There he used his merchant card, which facilitates guest
refunds, to transfer $500 from the eftpos terminal to his
personal bank account at 6.49pm, followed by another $500 at
7.32pm.
He went back to the casino, but returned to transfer another
$980 to his account at 1.34am.
At 3pm on the same day he accessed the safe inside the
manager's office and took $175.
He took another $80 from the safe later that day and
transferred $980 on the following two days.
Ross was remanded to appear for sentencing on February 27.
