Coronet Peak and Remarkables skifields parent company NZSki is confident 2011 early bird layby sales "exceeding expectations" bodes well for 2012 season passes.

Season passes will be on the market in February.

NZSki last October announced it was freezing season pass prices at 2011 levels.

This would allow those willing to commit to a pass at early bird pricing to "drip-feed" payments over eight months.

"We are looking forward to seeing what the numbers are like," NZSki chief executive James Coddington said.

"And if it reflects what the early birds were in October, it should be a positive response." Early bird passes are available only to residents of Southland and Otago.

They will be on the market from February 16 until mid-March.

Skifield work this summer at Coronet Peak includes redevelopment of the Rocky Gully Giant Slalom course to meet FIS race standards, and vehicle parking facilities have been upgraded.

At The Remarkables developments include include a "direct-to-lift" access system at Shadow Basin, and the 25-year-old chairlift haul rope has been replaced.

More rental gear has also been acquired and 3km of the access road has been resurfaced.

Queenstown early bird passes remain at the 2011 prices, following protests over rises from 2010 levels.

The prices are $889 adult and $589 for youths aged 7 to 17 years and seniors aged 65 to 74 years.
