Kate Jerram, of Lake Hawea, celebrated with the winners'
trophy as captain of the "town" team in the annual Waitangi
weekend Hawea Town v Country Challenge yesterday, while
"country" captain and event co-organiser Ray O'Brien, of Hawea
Flat, and fellow co-organiser Colleen Carr, of Lake Hawea, look
on.
Town, dressed in blue and made up of Lake Hawea residents,
won the competition for the third year in a row, despite a
convincing win by the red-coloured country side - comprising
Hawea Flat folk - in the quiz on Sunday evening.
Town fought back hard in the physical challenges yesterday,
claiming victory in cricket, volleyball, petanque, water
sliding, ultimate frisbee, the bike jam, and most of the "top
town" events at Peter Fraser Park, Lake Hawea.
The challenge has been held every year during the Waitangi
weekend since 2006.
