The Queenstown Car Club is welcoming more members to its growing group and the club's director says it is a good opportunity for learning drivers to join in a safe environment.

The club meets once a month and yesterday the cars turned out at the Stalker Rd quarry near the Shotover River for the gravel auto cross.

Director Julian Ford said the club was trying to recruit more members, especially at entry level, and help build up their skills in the car.

"It is a growing club and a very safe environment to be learning."

The terrain each month could differ from the tarmac, to gravel and on to grass, Mr Ford said.

Several fathers had been signing up their sons and daughters, making the club a good family environment, he said.

The club was also working on getting lessons for entry level drivers in its newest "little Ford Ka" car, Mr Ford said.

There are between 50 and 60 members in the club, which has been running for three years.
