29% more winter flights

The number of winter flights in and out of Queenstown this year will be nearly a third up on last year, making this the busiest winter period for the airport.

Between June and August there will be 3078 scheduled flights at Queenstown Airport, a 29% increase on the same period last year.

August will be the busiest month with 1148 flights. It is traditionally the height of the resort's ski season.

Queenstown Airport chief executive Scott Paterson said the airport was also pushing for an expansion of the terminal building.

"This new build will increase the departure area from security to lounge by up to 50%, which will go a long way towards alleviating the current terminal restrictions."

To speed up the building process, Air New Zealand had moved its Koru lounge from the terminal building to a temporary lounge.

Construction is expected to be complete by late spring.
