An early morning petrol thief drove away from Frankton's Z petrol station without paying for $60 of fuel on Sunday.

The incident happened at about 4am.

• A car was tipped on to its side and the driver remained trapped for four hours on the Glenorchy-Queenstown road on Sunday morning due to slippery conditions.

At 4am, the 63-year-old Queenstown man's car slid on the road and ended up tilted and stuck on the side bank.

He waited there in his sleeping bag until 8am, when a search and rescue team passed by on the way to an exercise.

The driver had been unable to contact anyone after the crash because there was no cellphone coverage and chose to stay in the car because it was cold, Sergeant Keith Newell said.

Two volunteers who were on their way to Glenorchy found the man inside his car, helped him out and called the police.

Sgt Newell said this illustrated greasy winter conditions.

• A 40-year-old Invercargill man was found in possession of a pipe with cannabis residue at the Queenstown airport on Sunday morning.

Police found the pipe on the man about 9.30am and gave him a warning before sending him on his outbound international flight.
