ASB Bank and St John workers ditched dress shoes for sneakers on Wednesday to run a full marathon in an effort to bring in some much-needed funds for St John.

During the St John annual appeal week, which runs until tomorrow, ASB Bank and St John teamed up and workers from both groups completed a full marathon (42km) by running on a treadmill in the Remarkables ASB branch.

St John Wakatipu area executive officer Jessica Patch said staff took turns running, with the public offered the chance to hop on for a bit also.

ASB workers who contributed were sponsored to run a set amount of kilometres, with branch manager Chris Clark running about 7km.

Mr Clark said it was important for the bank to help St John and the marathon was a way to both fundraise and create awareness.

"As a bank, we've got a really good relationship with St John."

The aim had been to complete the marathon by day's end but the full distance was completed by 3.30pm, Nicola Pullar, senior customer services officer at the branch, said.

There had been strong support from the community and the event had raised good awareness of St John's work, she said.

Miss Patch said the organisation hoped the money raised this week would help provide a free health shuttle bus to transport patients to and from Invercargill, and contribute to an extra ambulance in the Glenorchy region.

Wakatipu area committee chairman Marty Black estimated about $130,000 was needed for both projects and he hoped the money raised would be added to by sponsorship from businesses.

Mr Black spoke highly of ASB's participation, saying the staff were very supportive.

The bank will also host a sausage sizzle tomorrow between 11 and 2pm.

Donation boxes have been set up in ski areas, bars and ASB branches throughout Queenstown, with a positive response so far.

"We had a collection outside New World on Saturday and raised $2700," Miss Patch said.

St John will also enter a float in the Winter Festival parade tomorrow, with 10 volunteers attempting CPR to the tune of Staying Alive.
