Dublin Bay gate locked

Vandalism of a boundary fence and gate at Dublin Bay has led the Department of Conservation (Doc) to lock the entrance gate to its reserve there and cancel firewood permits.

Doc Wanaka area manager Paul Hellebrekers said yesterday the fence had been left "in tatters" by people suspected of taking firewood illegally from the conservation land and adjacent private property, across the Clutha River from the Outlet Motor Camp.

He said the fence was cut at several locations on more than one occasion and the access gate to a pine plantation was rammed after it was locked during a period of high fire risk.

Two cattle beasts got out and died after eating tutu.

Mr Hellebrekers said he was disappointed at "the escalation in this type of behaviour" which made extra work for staff and landowners.

"Until the ongoing problems can be resolved, Doc will lock the entrance gates, limiting vehicle access to the reserve, and firewood collection permits will be cancelled until further notice. If this type of behaviour continues, the department will have to consider closing the vehicle access permanently."

The area will stay open for mountain biking, walking and other recreational activities.

Senior Constable Mike Johnston, of the Wanaka police, supported Doc's actions.

"This type of behaviour by a few thoughtless and inconsiderate individuals has affected law-abiding public conservation area users."

He asked the public to report suspicious behaviour in the area.
