A four-day celebration, culminating in the opening of the
extended lagoon walkway and the refurbished Glenorchy
Library, will be held at Labour weekend to celebrate
Glenorchy's 150th year.
The Glenorchy Community Association has outlined the event's
schedule in a resource consent application submitted to Lakes
Environmental.
An historical display and children's artwork will be featured
in the Glenorchy hall and the celebrations will begin on
Friday, October 19 with the launch of the Glenorchy
Road DVD and a costumed '50s dance party that night.
On Saturday there would be a picnic in Paradise and the
unveiling of the Paradise scheelite mine information board.
TSS Earnslaw would be a focus on Sunday, taking
passengers around the head of the lake to a market day,
followed by the Glenorchy heritage dinner, when diners would
be encouraged to dress in 1900s fashion.
"Glenorchy Day" was planned for Monday 22, and would consist
of food and craft, 1860s dress, a beard-growing competition,
a picnic, a mass group photo and the official openings of the
refurbished library and the extended lagoon walkway over
wetland.
The resource consent application said the "restoration of the
old Glenorchy Library back to its original condition will
provide a focal point for the Historic Trail".
Glenorchy roads would not be closed but event signage would
be displayed and marshalls would assist with parking.
