McDonald's manager 'kicked man in head'

A duty manager at a McDonald's Restaurant has been remanded on bail after allegedly assaulting a customer by throwing him to the ground and kicking him in the head.

Rishi Kumar (34) appeared in the Queenstown District Court yesterday charged with causing injury with intent to injure.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Ian Collin told the court the incident happened at 3am on August 30.

He said Kumar grabbed by the arm a customer who had walked into a restricted area for a second time. Kumar then punched the man in the face, stood on his torso and "football kicked" him in the face.

The actions were caught on CCTV footage, Sgt Collin said.

At 3am the victim had walked into the restaurant and proceeded to enter a restricted area. Kumar had escorted him out.

The second time, the victim walked towards Kumar pointing his iPhone at him, and was then grabbed by the defendant, who threw the victim to the ground.

Sgt Collin said a McDonald's worker then approached the victim and helped him to his feet.

Minutes later, Kumar returned to the scene and began to mop up the victim's blood, Sgt Collin said.

The victim had received a cut to his left eyebrow requiring five stitches.

Kumar entered a guilty plea.

In an explanation to police, he said he was worried the victim would enter the restricted area for a third time.

Judge Kevin Phillips did not grant the interim name suppression sought by the defendant's counsel, because it was a matter of public interest. He said conviction was likely on October 23.

Kumar is a Queenstown resident.
