Seeking to add to its growing list of trails, the Queenstown
Mountain Bike Club is hoping to establish a new cross-country
trail on Coronet Peak.
The trail would be located between the Greengates Express
chairlift and the cattle stop near Coronet Peak Rd and
Skippers Saddle.
When not covered in snow, the area displays tussock and
exotic grasses and it is proposed these be removed along the
trail route and replanted along the trail edges.
The trail width would be 1.4m over 1670m.
Construction would start as soon as consent was granted by
Lakes Environmental, and the trail would be completed by next
winter.
The Department of Conservation, which administers the reserve
land, has approved the trail subject to 23 conditions, such
as the avoidance of straight lines in shaping the trail,
leaving larger plants in place and avoiding slip-prone areas.
NZSki has also notified the club of its approval.
