Construction continues on a showroom for 50 new and pre-owned Toyota and Holden vehicles and a 12-bay workshop in Frankton.

GWD Motor Group managing director Bob Crawford, of Invercargill, said this week the complex in Lucas Pl was expected to be open for business in late March or early April.

The Queenstown dealership had outgrown its premises in Gorge Rd and the new facility would provide better customer service, Mr Crawford said.

"We need to be where the local people and the retail area of town are," Mr Crawford said.

The 11 existing staff would be transferred and extra technicians were being interviewed.

GWD was working with a Wakatipu architect to mitigate the impact of the 8.5m-high building and 2504sq m footprint on the natural environment.

The location puts the Toyota and Holden retailer directly opposite Audi, Volkswagen and Subaru retailer Queenstown Motor Group in Hawthorne Dr.
