Environmental officers poised for a noisy summer

Based on monthly statistics, Lakes Environmental noise enforcement officers can expect the number of noise complaints received last month to more than double heading into summer

The number of complaints so far for 2012, show 105 and 106 complaints were received in January and February respectively. The number varied for the following months.

In June, winter festival month, there were 65 complaints compared with 29 in May and 64 in April.

A total of 70 complaints were received in August and 60 in September, October dropped to 41.

Following some of the complaints, excessive noise directives were issued by Queenstown Lakes District Council noise enforcement officers.

Ten notices were issued in January, and 31 in February.

The highest number for a month in 2012 has so far been June, with 23 notices issued for 65 complaints.

A spokesman from Lakes Environmental said an excessive noise directive could result in equipment, such as stereos, being seized with the aid of a police officer.
