Comment is being sought from the community on a proposal to
develop the Kelly's Flat reserve in Wanaka into junior
football grounds.
The reserve, in Aubrey Rd, is next to Wanaka Primary School
and across the road from Holy Family School.
QLDC parks manager Gordon Bailey said the idea for the
proposed football grounds arose from consultation that took
place in Wanaka in 2008 concerning sites for sporting
facilities. The grounds were intended to be complementary to
the proposed Wanaka Sports Facility at Three Parks.
"Kelly's Flat was identified during that process as having
potential for use as a sports ground," Mr Bailey said.
"We've talked to the soccer club about their needs and now
it's time to find out how the wider community feels."
A draft layout plan for the site had been drawn up,
comprising four pitches, 30 angled car parks and toilets. A
pop-up irrigation system would also be installed. A budget of
$500,000 had been set aside for the proposed work.
Mr Bailey said the site was ideally situated.
"It's handy to schools and easy to get to and from. It's also
relatively flat so wouldn't require much levelling work."
A drop-in session on the proposal will be held on Monday,
November 26, from 5pm to 6pm, in the Faulks Room at the Lake
Wanaka Centre.
