Hiring a family support worker for the ballooning population of Queenstown is the aim of the Wakatipu Anglican Parish and proceeds from its popular market day on November 24 will be go towards funding the position.

The Rt Rev Dr David Coles said an extra $15,000 was sought for the much-needed part-time role, to begin in the new year.

Employing a children and family worker would help build a network between families and the church, Dr Coles said.

Statistics New Zealand released population projections in October which predicted an additional 17,400 residents in the Queenstown Lakes district by 2031, with the population increasing at a rate of 2.2% a year until 2031.

The population of the district was 24,100 in 2006.

"Because the district keeps growing and there are lots of young families in the parish, we realise we should be doing more in terms of those families," the vicar said on Friday.

"It's difficult to get volunteers who can provide that level of commitment."

The public are invited to drop off their goods at the parish office on Church St this Thursday and Friday, before the Anglican Parish of Wakatipu Market Day opens on the grounds of St Peter's Church, on Saturday, November 24, from 9am to noon.

The family-friendly fete will feature stalls selling everything from homemade cakes, savouries, jams, chutneys and preserves to cut flowers and plants.

Clothing, children's toys, books, CDs, DVDs and "elegant junk" will be available at the market, plus a sausage sizzle, silent auction, raffles, face-painting, Devonshire teas and coffee, all with musical entertainment.
