Shotover Jet is the highest-ranking Queenstown attraction
(at 49) in AA Tourism's new "101 Must-Do's for Kiwis", while
scenic wonders in Fiordland were the highest in the South.
Cruise Doubtful Sound with Real Journeys, at No 6, was the
highest-ranking activity by a Queenstown-based operator in
the home-grown chart announced this week, which was formed by
283,000 public votes split over 1600 attractions.
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa took the top spot.
The 150km Otago Central Rail Trail was the highest-rated
Otago "must-do" at No 5, followed by Taieri Gorge Railway
(59), Arrowtown (63), Skyline Queenstown (91), TSS Earnslaw
and Walter Peak High Country Farm Excursions (96) and Mt
Difficulty Wines (100).
Fiordland attractions Cruise Doubtful Sound (6), Mitre Peak
and Milford Sound (25), Fiordland National Park (30) and the
54km Milford Track (32) featured in the top 50.
Tourism Industry Association (TIA) chief executive Martin
Snedden said the new 101 Must-Do's for Kiwis list highlighted
the huge range of activities and experiences New Zealanders
could enjoy in their own backyard.
"I encourage every New Zealander to get out over summer and
visit a new destination or try an activity they have never
experienced," Mr Sneddon said.
"The 101 Must-Do's list offers dozens of ideas and TIA's 1500
plus members look forward to giving visitors a fantastic
time.
Domestic tourism adds $13.8 billion a year to New Zealand's
tourism industry, with New Zealanders travelling in their own
country contributing $38 million in economic activity every
day of the year.
