Tried-and-true programme for New Year celebration

The New Year will be welcomed in Queenstown with the traditional free, family-friendly celebration on Marine Parade.

Queenstown Lakes District Council arts and events facilitator Jan Maxwell said from 7.30pm until 1am on New Year's Eve there would be live bands, other entertainment and a fireworks display at midnight.

''I think we have got a really good formula. We get lots of families and it's nice and safe,'' Ms Maxwell said.

Queenstown favourites the Sequin Sisters are included in the music line-up, as are the Fletcherz, whose members attend Wakatipu High School.

The Fletcherz won the Battle of the Bands competition this year and part of their prize is a performing spot in the New Year's Eve celebrations.

• Roads to be closed for the event include Rees St from Shotover St to Marine Parade, Marine Parade from Rees St to Church St, and Beach St from Camp St to Shotover St. They will be closed from 5pm December 31 until 2am January 1.
