Two kayakers whose craft overturned on the Clutha River near
Wanaka at the weekend were later helped ashore safely after a
jet-boat and jet ski were sent out from nearby Albert Town.
Four people had been kayaking on the river, near Lake Wanaka,
in three craft when their kayaks overturned early on Saturday
evening, police said.
Two people, each apparently in a single-seat kayak, were able
to right their craft and come ashore safely, Sergeant Lindsay
Turner, of the Christchurch police communications centre,
said.
The other two kayakers, in a two-person kayak, apparently
could not right their craft and continued to drift
downstream.
Wanaka police were alerted by a member of the public at
5.46pm, but by 6.18pm the two remaining kayakers had been
helped to safety by people in a jet-boat and jet ski sent out
from Albert Town, east of Wanaka.
