The Lake Hawea community is still in the running to be chosen
as the Kiwibank community of the year.
When the finalists in the national competition were announced
yesterday, the 3000-strong Lake Hawea community was one of
three in the community section.
Those responsible for choosing the finalists noted the
community had worked ''tirelessly'' to improve infrastructure
and preserve the beauty of the area while maintaining a
strong community spirit.
The other contenders are the Grandparents Raising
Grandchildren Trust, which has a membership of more than
5000, and the community of Uawa-Tolaga Bay.
The winner of the community of the year trophy and $5000 will
be announced in Auckland on February 28.
Contenders for the New Zealander of the Year title are Prof
Swee T. Tan, of Wellington, Bill Buckley, of Auckland, and
Dame Anne Salmond, of Auckland.
