Competitors in the Challenge Wanaka triathlon, which began
with a swim in Lake Wanaka early today, may be in for another
soaking.
Between 30mm and 40mm of rain has been forecast for the Otago
headwaters this morning.
That is expected to slow the fall in the levels of lakes
Hawea, Wanaka and Wakatipu, but the Otago Regional Council
(ORC) does not expect a return to the flood levels of last
week.
The high level of the Clutha River forced Challenge
organisers yesterday to divert runners away from the
still-flooded Outlet Track and on to nearby roads.
The ORC says flows in the Clutha River will remain high.
Contact Energy reduced the discharge from the Lake Roxburgh
Dam last night to fill the lake but from noon to 3pm today
the discharge will be progressively increased.
People downstream of the Roxburgh Dam are advised to be aware
of the increasing flow this afternoon.
