Taking strategy to people

To help residents understand the district plan review and gather suggestions, the Queenstown Lakes District Council will hold roadshows at Queenstown and Wanaka supermarkets.

The council's general manager of policy and planning, Phil Pannett, said as everybody in the region ''lives in a dwelling of some description'', they were affected by the district plan.

Proposed changes to where a house can be built, the house size, the fence height and where the garage sits are included in the review.

Growth boundaries for Queenstown and Wanaka are also to be debated.

''Growth boundaries help us guide where future infrastructure goes and help us protect the district's rural landscape,'' Mr Pannett said.

''This is not necessarily about expansion.

''The growth boundaries proposed for Queenstown and Wanaka contain land enough to provide for the projected population though to 2031, if not beyond, and if we put them in place now, it gives us certainty around preparing for the future.''

The boundaries were included in the district plan in 2012 but none had yet been introduced.

Roadshow dates and times are. - Tuesday, January 29: Wakatipu New World, Remarkables Park, Frankton 3pm-6pm.

Wednesday, January 30: Fresh Choice Queenstown, Gorge Rd, 1pm-4pm.

Thursday, January 31: Wanaka New World, Dunmore St, 10am-2pm.
