School group member flown out of park

A member of a group from Mt Aspiring College in Wanaka was flown out of Mt Aspiring National Park yesterday morning with an injured ankle.

Rescue Co-ordination Centre spokesman Michael Flyger said an emergency beacon was set off near the Rock of Ages bivouac, Aspiring Flat, at 9.45am by the party of 30 pupils and five or six adults.

He did not know if the injured female was a pupil or adult. She was flown to the Wanaka Medical Centre.

The incident occurred 11km beyond the end of the nearest road. Mr Flyger said it showed the value of tramping parties carrying beacons.
