The first of many speed-limit changes was put in place on
Monday morning near Lake Hayes. Queenstown Lakes District
Council contractors from Downer will be installing speed-limit
reduction signs from Hawea to Wanaka to Cardrona and Kelvin
Downer contractors Tim Dhinakar and Mike Fraser put the first
speed-limit sign up at Hogans Gully Rd to indicate an 8km
zone on the gravel road and a 70km limit on Lake Hayes Rd.
The rest of the signs will go up on March 1 and will affect
roads such as the Lake Hayes-Arrowtown Flat Rd, Cardrona
Valley Rd and Slopehill Rd. Four signs will go up on Kelvin
Heights Peninsula Rd.
The councils are asking that motorists pay close attention to
signage when new speed limits come into force around the
district this Friday.
The changes were adopted by the council in December last year
and most involve reductions in the existing speed limits.
Queenstown Lakes District Council transport manager Denis
Mander said people would need to be alert.
''Signage will be going up over the next week so it should be
quite obvious to people who use those roads regularly where a
change will be taking place.
''All motorists should be checking signs and making sure
they're driving to the correct limit.''
