Queenstown police have released CCTV images of a woman accused of "blatantly" stealing a piece of fabric art.

Officers say the artwork, taken from Lakes District Museum at 4.30pm yesterday, was worth $625.

"She went to the rear of the gallery and blatantly stole a piece of fabric art off the display wall," said senior constable Beth Fookes.

"The art stolen was a one-off, hand-made piece consisting of bright blue and orange fabrics."

Fookes says the woman was wearing a bum bag so might be a tourist.
