Lee back at snow park

Skiers and snowboarders will need to wait another 10 days to find out what the Snow Park in the Cardrona Valley is offering for this ski season.

The park is owned by the Lee family but for the past three seasons it has been operated under a lease agreement by Robin Sadowski-Synnott and her husband, Sean.

Sam Lee told the Otago Daily Times over Easter that the lease expired at the end of March and, as of today, he would resume his previous role as manager.

Mr Lee said he would spend the next 10 days finalising arrangements with international skiers and snowboarders before announcing the park's availability to the public.

With the only two half-pipes in the southern hemisphere that operate all season, the snow park and the Cardrona Alpine Resort, across the valley, are expected to be in big demand this winter, as athletes prepare for the Winter Olympics in Russia in February next year.

''I could comfortably say Wanaka will be hosting every freestyle Winter [Olympic] medallist this winter,'' Mr Lee said.

''Everyone you see on a podium at the Olympics will have trained in Wanaka.''

And Mr Lee expects to see athletes push the boundaries during their pre-Olympic training sessions.

''That's when you see a lot of these athletes produce new tricks.

''It's incredible what they can do on slopestyle.''

Mr Lee said the margin for error had become a lot narrower and the park was looking at upgrading its on-field medical services.

Mr Lee said all the ''key staff'' at the park would be returning and a new groomer was being bought.
