The Rude Rock Trail, named after a giant rock on Coronet Peak, has been ''hugely popular'' since it was officially opened at the beginning of last month, Queenstown Mountain Bike Club secretary Brendan Callaghan says.

Mr Callaghan said with the opening of the trail, which runs from the Coronet Peak base building to Skippers Rd, there had been a significant increase in riders. One Wednesday nights a volunteer group has been busy creating a track from the Skippers Pack Track to the Rude Rock Trail.

Club president Tom Hey was ''the mastermind'' behind the trail, and funding came from the Queenstown Trails Trust, Mr Callaghan said.

The trail was completed in two weeks, at a cost of $7500, under the budget of $10,000.
