With 17% of New Zealand's population having a disability according to the 2006 census, Anna Jameson, of CCS Disability Action, is asking that the Queenstown Lakes District Council have an adviser to advocate for the rights of that group.

In the written submission on the council's draft annual plan, Ms Jameson said the Wakatipu Access Group ''felt that the council should have a disability adviser in a part-time role''.

She noted it was unusual the council did not have a disability strategy and was firm in saying access to council services was an area which could be improved for disabled people in the region.

''While there have been positive changes to mobility parking, for example, ... improvement is needed to the access of services such as Alpine Aqualand.

''If you use a wheelchair or have a mobility impairment, it is extremely difficult to get through the two sets of double doors and the doors into the pool.

''It is also impossible to swipe your card using a wheelchair,'' the submission said.
