Having captured everything from someone falsely claiming their snowboard had been stolen to a dog stealing designer bread to people involved in serious assaults, the Arrowtown CCTV system is now in need of help itself.

The Arrowtown Village Association owns the system of 15 cameras. Councillors at the Queenstown Lakes District Council's hearing for submissions on its draft annual plan were last week told the system needed maintenance.

Arrowtown community Senior Constable Beth Fookes said ''the big moment'' of the last serious assault in Arrowtown was not captured because a camera was not working.

Snr Const Fookes told councillors she had to split her time between Arrowtown and her other policing duties, and many offences occurred when she was not in the village. She urged councillors to contribute towards the camera system maintenance.

Jim Ryan, on behalf of the Arrowtown Village Association, informed the council that, since November last year, 122 parking infringement tickets had been issued to people who had been caught on camera parking in the village's two mobility parks.

That amounted to $12,000 in revenue for the council. The camera system was now in need of $5000 ''to refurbish and maintain the network'' the village association's submission said.

The system is based at the Arrowtown community police station and was established about eight years ago.
