Driving to the movies on a 1930s winter night was not all about wrapping up in fur coats and feathers.

There was always the worry about the car.

As temperatures began to drop in Wanaka last night, Mark and Sonia Richter, of Wanaka, told the Otago Daily Times their splendid 1931 Hispano-Suiza would have to be left at home in the garage.

The ''exotic metals'' in its nine-and-a-half-litre V12 engine cannot abide anti-freeze.

The Richters have owned their Spanish-Swiss-French luxury Art Deco-era automobile for two years.

And even though the car would not make it to the opening night of The Great Gatsby movie at Ruby's Cinema, in Wanaka, it had clocked up a few more touring hours during the lead-up to what would be a special night for Art Deco fans like the Richters.

Mrs Richter, who is an artist and fashion designer, said she loved the 1920s and '30s era.

The couple were married in Art Deco style in February and have twice attended Napier's Art Deco festival.

Last night, they were among a group of 37 attending the Wanaka premiere of the movie.

The theatre had also been decked out in extreme Art Deco fashion.
