Wanaka library manager Sue Gwilliam is understood to be one of those out of a job as the result of a Queenstown Lakes District Council staff restructuring.

Ms Gwilliam declined to discuss the matter when approached by the Otago Daily Times this week.

However, Dame Sukhi Turner, a member of the Protect Wanaka Library group set up to fight the restructuring, said it was her understanding Ms Gwilliam was one of those who had not been employed when library staff reapplied for a reduced number of jobs.

A review of council staff earlier this year recommended reducing Wanaka library staff by 3.5 equivalent full-time staff (EFTS).

And this week, Wanaka Community Board chairman and Queenstown Lakes district councillor Lyall Cocks confirmed his wife Diana had also been unsuccessful when reapplying for a job at the library.

Mr Cocks said his wife had been a staff member at the library for 10 years and had been a volunteer for several years before that.

Dame Sukhi said she was very disappointed to learn of the redundancies.

''I'm sure all the library people are quite disturbed by all this. It's people's livelihood we are talking about here.''

Although the restructuring was carried out by council chief executive Adam Feeley, Dame Sukhi considered responsibility lay with the whole council.

''The delegated responsibility to the chief executive has been quite enormous. I just sheet this home to the elected people, really.

''They are obviously not listening.''

She said it was a nonsense to suggest making nearly a third of library staff redundant was not going to affect services.

''I'm very disappointed, quite frankly, and I really feel not only for us as library users ... but for those people who do not have a job any more.''

Mr Feeley has said previously council staff numbers overall were being reduced by 40 EFTS.

Figures provided by the council suggest between 50 and 83 of the council's 335 ''actual employees'' may have lost their jobs through the restructuring.

Approached about the library redundancies yesterday, council communications manager Meaghan Miller said the council had no comment.
