Glenorchy contractor John Henderson stands last week in front of the new $150,000 Routeburn Flats Bridge he installed, which will open for trampers this week.

The wider and stronger bridge, just below the Routeburn Flats Hut, replaces an 18-year-old bridge built by the New Zealand Defence Force after major flood damage in the valley.

Also, Twin Bridge and Sugarloaf Stream Bridge were upgraded with new dead-man anchors, decks and handrails. Several sections of the track are being upgraded and work by the contractors, Wilson Contractors Ltd, is continuing despite snowfalls.

A 180m section of track near the Routeburn Flats Hut is being realigned and a 2384m section between the Routeburn Flats Hut and Routeburn Falls Hut is being upgraded and resurfaced and new culverts and drainage are being installed.

A 120m section below the falls hut is being upgraded with new timber-edged retaining and gravel to solve problems of water erosion.
