A collection police described as ''an Aladdin's cave of
stolen items'' was allegedly shoplifted by an 18-year-old
Australian pupil who was in the resort for a school sports
Senior Constable Chris Blackford said an alert shop assistant
saw the pupil stealing items and the pupil was followed.
At 11am on Thursday the pupil was arrested and charged with
It is alleged the pupil stole ski goggles, pounamu, jewellery
and rugby jerseys worth $1300.
Police deemed the alleged crime too serious to be dealt with
by way of diversion and the pupil would be appearing in
Queenstown District Court on Monday.
The pupil consequently missed his scheduled flight out of New
Snr Const Blackford said the Canberra school had been helping
police and as a result more stolen items were delivered to
police, though it was not known who might potentially have
taken those items.
There were 18 pupils and 14 teachers in his group. One
teacher remained behind with the pupil and the other members
of his group were understood to have left for Australia.
