In the lead-up to the Queenstown Volunteer Fire Brigade's 150th anniversary, more than 1000 Wakatipu preschool and primary school children are to visit the fire station.

Last week, children from Wakatipu Kindergarten each knocked down a metal target by spraying it with a fire hose as well as learning how many firefighters there were in New Zealand and what they did.

The station is holding an open day on October 19 from 10am-2pm and it was hoped the school visits would encourage children and their families to attend.

The anniversary will be celebrated at Labour Weekend on October 26 and veteran and vintage fire appliances, including a hose reel used in the 1880s and a Renault fire appliance, will be on display.

The hose reel is presently in Geraldine in a museum and the Renault is in the Wanaka National Transport and Toy Museum.
