A bird's nest sitting on a hot engine caused a car to
catch fire in the Wanaka New World car park yesterday
Shoppers spotted smoke and flames coming from the bonnet of
the car and called the fire brigade.
A neighbour used a garden hose to keep the fire under control
until firefighters arrived and extinguished it.
Station officer Dave Little said the remains of a bird's nest
were found behind the car's engine.
Birds' nests often caused fires in tractor engines at this
time of year, but rarely in cars, Mr Little said.
The young owner of the car, who returned to the car park to
find a crowd of bystanders and a blackened car bonnet,
declined to comment on the incident.
