This is Save Kiwi Week. The inaugural week was organised for
Kiwi, the trading name of independent charity the Kiwi Trust.
The trust was launched in October 2012 and Save Kiwi Week
aims to raise $100,000 to help protect 1000 wild kiwi.
Some of the fundraising will come from Queenstown, where the
Kiwi Birdlife Park is auctioning a kiwi experience and
holding a sausage sizzle. The park breeds for release and
last year its kiwi chick Tuku was released into a sanctuary
above Hawkes Bay.
The Kiwis for Kiwi website says 95% of kiwi are killed in the
wild before they breed, and if nothing is done ''we will lose
kiwi from our forests in our lifetime''.
A chance to release a kiwi into the wild with Kiwis for Kiwi
patron Sir Graham Henry is offered through a competition on
the trust's website.
Save Kiwi Week runs until October 20.
