Heavy rain expected in Otago headwaters

Otago Regional Council will keep an eye on Lake Wakatipu this weekend following Metservice predictions heavy rain will fall in the headwaters of the region's rivers and lakes.

Metservice is expecting a series of fronts and troughs to move up the South Island on Sunday, followed by a cold southwest flow.

Lake Wakatipu is expected to peak at 311.2m early on Monday morning, which could place pressure on the resort's stormwater system.

The anticipated lake level is just below the 311.3m at which minor ponding occurs in lakeside reserves.

Flood managers will monitor the situation during the weekend and issue updates as required.
