Picnic to honour librarians

A community picnic in the park to honour Wanaka's librarians will be held tomorrow.

All Upper Clutha residents are invited to the event, sponsored by the Wanaka Public Library Association (WPLA), at the Rotary playground at the southwest end of Lake Wanaka, from noon.

Association secretary Kate Bariletti said the picnic was to ''thank and appreciate'' Wanaka's librarians past and present.

This year's Queenstown Lakes District Council staff restructuring meant three Wanaka librarians lost their jobs from October 1.

''Community people were saying, 'What are we doing for the librarians who are leaving?','' Ms Bariletti said.

Those former employees would be attending the picnic along with current staff, including Sue Gwilliam, who previously held the role of library manager, Ms Bariletti said.

Mrs Gwilliam was also out of a job as a result of the restructuring but has since been appointed as Wanaka Library's service centre co-ordinator.

Depending on the picnic's success, it was possible it would become an annual event.

''It's basically a chance for a large community, young to old, to come together and enjoy each other's company and a bit of activity.''

Those attending were encouraged to bring family, lunch, chairs, rugs, bikes and helmets for an afternoon of fun and games, walking and riding.
