The owner of this "classic'' 1985 Lancia Beta was philosophical as he watched it burn in Meadowstone Drive, Wanaka, about 5pm yesterday.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: "It's not uncommon for Italian cars to blow up. It's just part of it.''

Neighbour Mark Gould said the fire began as just a "little wisp'' of smoke under the bonnet.

The Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade doused the flames and recovered a new cambelt the man had intended fitting to the car.

He does not expect the car can be salvaged.
