Former chief executive of the Vincent hospital board Marius Willemsen (85) and his wife Gerda (82) celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary at Elmslie House, in Wanaka, today.

The couple said they had already celebrated the anniversary with family and friends and today would be relatively quiet.

Mrs Willemsen, her sister and three brothers came to New Zealand from the fishing town of Harderwijk, in the Netherlands, in 1951, as assisted immigrants.

Mrs Willemsen went to a job at the Balclutha hospital. Mr Willemsen left Leerdam, in the Netherlands, in 1952, and his first job was in Dunedin working for the post office.

The following year, he moved to Balclutha. Asked how they met, Mr Willemsen joked he could not remember.

''It was 60 years ago.''

The couple moved to Wanaka from Clyde about a year ago.
