Centre interests Hilton, Porter says

Just as the Queenstown Lakes District Council-led convention centre proposal creeps forward, the developer behind the resort's second planned centre is also making moves.

Council chief executive Adam Feeley yesterday gave councillors an update of the proposed Remarkables Park Ltd centre, saying it was recent news to him that the Hilton had offered to operate it.

Remarkables Park co-director Alastair Porter, who was not present at yesterday's meeting, told the Otago Daily Times Hilton, which has a hotel nearby, was one of the parties interested in managing the proposed Frankton centre.

While councillors heard that conference organisers tended to book three years in advance, Mr Porter said he was confident only a year was needed and organisers had already been in contact expressing interest.

Mr Feeley told councillors he did not envisage active promotion of the Remarkables Park centre ''given funding hasn't been secured'' but Mr Porter yesterday retaliated that ''funding is available from the wider Porter Group for the project''.

A resource consent application was likely to be filed by Remarkables Park in either March or April next year, Mr Porter said.

Once consent was received, construction could begin in the second half of 2014.
