A cycle tourist the Otago Daily Times spoke to on his way south past Lake Hawea yesterday thought he might have had better luck back home in the German winter.
Dressed in a plastic rubbish bag ''shirt'' and with plastic bags over his shoes, Stuttgart cycle veteran Uwe Lott said he was soaking wet and heading for the nearest motel.
He had suffered through an awful week down the West Coast.
''It's terrible. Terrible.''
He said his two-month South Island trip started out well in December.
''The east coast ... fantastic. But since the new year began, only rain.''
Mr Lott travels 12,000km a year by bicycle, mostly around Europe, and he is 1800km into his South Island venture.
