Remarkable Theatre players (from left) Andrew Edgar, Greg Dorn, Nicky Busst, Victoria Keating and Fiona Bracken show their true colours in the coming promenade theatre performance A Jolly Good Stroll in the Gardens: An Afternoon of Classic British Comedy.

The theatre is keeping the British end up by performing popular scenes and sketches from the Mother Country in the Queenstown Gardens.

Almost 20 veteran actors and newcomers are now rehearsing the show for staging as part of the Summerdaze Festival from January 24-26.

A right royal knees-up is promised for audiences as they are guided from vignette to vignette and watch live re-enactments of favourite moments from films and television, such as Absolutely Fabulous, Fawlty Towers, Not the Nine O'Clock News and The Young Ones.

Queenstown director and actress Victoria Keating said she was delighted to see the enthusiastic cast were putting their own spin on the material in rehearsals.

''We're not trying to be John Cleese, or Jennifer Saunders. We're trying to do a nice tribute to the British comedy we grew up with and everybody knows and loves,'' Ms Keating said.

• Admission is by gold coin donation. The show lasts about an hour and begins at 6pm and 8pm on January 24 and at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm on January 25 and 26.
