Queenstown's newest, and arguably the world's most scenic, par 3 hole was officially opened by Prime Minister John Key on Saturday afternoon.

Overlooking Queenstown, the fantasy golf hole has been built on Cecil Peak by The Golf Warehouse for Over The Top Helicopters.

More than 30 people, including the prime minister, New Zealand professional golfer Phil Tataurangi, golf course designer Greg Turner and Sir Michael Hill were flown up to the site on Saturday afternoon for the unveiling of the resort's rather quirky newest tourism attraction.

The idea for the hole came from an old calendar depicting fantasy golf holes.

Eric Faesenkloet, of The Golf Warehouse, said it had taken about four years for the idea of the hole to become a reality.

The 285m-long hole features four tees - Over The Top Rock, The Money Shot, The Key Hole and The Ladies Tee - with a vertical drop of about 450m.
